An ancient Japanese musical instrument comes into the spotlight again. The Koto is not only used in traditional music, but also modern day composers have also used the instrument in collaboration with orchestras since the early 1900s. Koto was used in old Japanese court music to sooth the body. It has been said that this instrument could purify you mind, body, and soul. There is an opening in the bottom of the Koto which releases the sound that seems to penetrate your body.

KHOOMEI :
A type of throat singing with a distinct fundamental and an overtone melody, used in folk music from Tuva.

DOSHPULUUR :
A three-stringed instrument with fretless similar to a banjo, but with the warm, organic sound of wood and goat skin.

IGIL :
A two-stringed, bowed and fretless instrument. Deeply connected with the mythology of the horse, the most important animal in Tuvan culture. The Igil sounds like a cross between violin and cello, and is often used to imitate the sound and rhythms of the horse.

Big Fish Audio (BFA) is one of my biggest distributors in the U.S. and are constantly updating their website to provide the latest and greatest from the sampling world. Recently the site has taken a whole new overhaul and if I might say a step in the right direction. The website is a lot easier to navigate and the the layout has improved 10 fold. I think the Google bots really like it because within a week of the new look Big Fish was already a PR5.

Koto Sample CD Receives Music Tech Magazine Value Award

The Koto Sample DVD received the Music Tech Value Award in the July 2009 issue # 76 of Music Tech Magazine.

The review was kinda a downer to read in some parts of the review, but nevertheless was lucky enough to be featured in MTM issue 76 which actually sold out. I can't find an issue to save my life, but fortunately the kind crew over at MTM was kind enough to send me their "last" copy.

Even if it didn't get the best review I was looking for it still got a good response from the producers and DJs that bought the album to use in their own productions.

Since the magazine was sold out and from the word on the street no reprints coming in the near future I have posted the review here for those of you who want to hear what MTM had to say about Koto sample DVD.

How To Convert The .RBS File Extension

I have been seeing a lot of confusion online with people downloading a free sample sound/song from a web site that is in the .RBS file extension and cannot open the file. Then I read so many posts about "download this converter" blah, blah, blah. The fact of the matter is there is no need for converter software. It is actually quite simple. But I give away the truth lets take a look at what a .rbs file extention is and what it is used for.

.RBS file extenstion is a Rebirth Song File created with the Rebirth RB-338 software synthesizer; may contain electronic instruments (voices) and drum sounds. This was discontinued by Propellerhead Software on September 1, 2005.

****Don't confuse the above file extension with .RBF which is a rollback script run by windows installer****

Ok enough talk. Here is how you make your .RBS files playable. After downloading the song in .RBS format just rename the file with the name of the song (easy reference later) and then add a .mp3 extention. Example. Here is a file name when I downloaded it from an old propellerhead website: "John%20Pearson%20-%2001%20-%20Sweet%20Sensation.rbs." I then changed the file name and type to Sweet_Sensation.mp3 and Walla... successfully "converterd" the unplayable file type.

It is really that easy. If you still can't figure it out hit me up and I will set you straight. As a last option you could always download the vintage Propellerhead Software since it is now free.

Now our samples can be downloaded directly from the Loopmasters website. (The days of waiting 2 weeks for the mail to arrive before you can start producing are over!!!)

Loopmasters gives new meaning to the word "distributor". They are always providing the best services and returns for all of their partners/labels. In short they don't beat around the bush. This is probably the main reason why they are so far ahead of the competition. Their reputation is inspecable and they are the leaders of the sampling industry.

Michael Jackson: We will miss you!!!

A day of mourning for singers, musicians, producers, and fans alike. The King of Pop Michael Jackson passed away Thursday, June 25, at 2:26 pm. Though the cause of death may never be fully known what is definitely known is that Michael was the best selling Pop Star of all time and even more so was a bridge between two races in the music industry. Although he was faced with a series of scandals in final years of which no-one can say for sure what happened. Only Michael and God know the truth and that is good enough for me.

It is really sad that he left us so early, but his legacy will live on as he joins other great record breakers such as The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, and of course Elvis.

My heart goes out to Michael's family, friends and fans like myself as I give my condolences.

Michael Jackson, we will miss you!!!

Discovery became legendary whern they released this collection onto the market in 1999. It caused a huge stir, and with good reason too. The quality of the recordings, and the sheer amount of samples in this library made it a hard one to ignore for people looking for a range of authentic sounding Chinese flavours. ( omission ) Discovery deserves all of the praise that was heaped in wads upon it when this collection was first released. When i got this, there was so much good usable stuff that i hardly new where to start. Admittedly, in my opinion, this sample pack seems more suited to movie and theatre scores, but anyone looking for traditional sounds would find it irreplaceable. Never have i heard such a fantastic slice of life from one culture. Except maybe the Alma Flamenco Release but even that didn’t have the diversity that this does. Butch give this a well deserved RF award. Well done discovery.

The sounds of the video game of the past that thrilled us at arcades and at home have now returned in an 8-bit anthology.

It has been over 25 years since the global disco sound boom of the 1970’s “Saturday Night Fever” music scene. These disco sounds were unstoppable during the era, however they quickly faded do to their formulaic nature. By the ’80s, disco was obsolete. During that period, the video arcade game phenomenon was conquering every coffee shop and mall around the world. The lo-fi “bit” sound was exploding in popularity, as the catchy sound of "Pac Man" and the like bleeped around the planet.

#6 TimeSpace (UK) Need I say more? Well most of you already know about this bad boys. (Bad means good) They have been around since since 1995 and continue to set the standard in the sample cd industry. They have a huge selection of samples and as far as "connections" go they probably have the most in that field as well. They are the true sample cd mentors and one of the original "old school" sample suppliers. Notice I didn't include sample CD there. You always give respect where respect is due and TimeSpace definitely get mine.

Yamaha DX-7 Sample Cd

There is a good reason why Yamaha’s DX-7 was the best-selling synth of all time, and why it dominated the music scene during the 1980s. It had the widest range of timbres, and its control sources (velocity, aftertouch, MW, envelopes, LFOs, etc.) could control that entire timbral range. No longer were we stuck with passing a stagnant waveform through a filter to modify timbre. A DX-7’s waveform could dramatically change over time and with control changes. It was famous for covering most of the sounds that gigging keyboard players needed, like bright tine electric pianos, crispy acoustic and especially electric slap basses, cutting melodic percussion (like xylophone and marimba and some new electronic melodic percussion that became classic DX-7 sounds), jazz guitars, punchy brass, B3 organs, drums and percussion, solo woodwinds, plucked instruments (like harp and koto), pads, and even sound effects.
